Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Event Type: Library Programs & Classes
Date: 10/29/2013
Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Time: 7:00 PM
Myopia (nearsightedness) is being called an epidemic, yet no clear cause has been identified. Approximately 60% of young adults in
the U.S. have been estimated to be nearsighted, with estimated rates as high as 80% in some other countries. In comparison, few individuals in primitive societies were nearsighted. This presentation will review the traditional reasons that have been given for children becoming myopic. It will then present the newest research that calls much of the traditional views into question. The presenter's two recent research studies found evidence for links between myopia development and childhood diet, outdoor play, stress, and other environmental factors. These will be discussed as well as other recent literature in the field.
